Maggot-Type Worms in their Kitchen Cabinets
mail43.html

Happens a lot - It's all protein....

Hello,  I have a question regarding maggot-type worms.  Just this morning we were in the kitchen and noticed one on the counter.  We looked up on the ceiling and found worms all over.

They are only in the kitchen and eating area of our house.  Do you know what we can buy to get rid of them?  I don't know where they are coming from.   They are little white worms about 1/2 inch long.

Thanks,

LWO

Hello, LWO:

You have "stored product pests."  This is what you do.  Look in your kitchen pantry/cabinets.  Stand at the sink, take out all the stored products, (cake mixes, spices, cookies, crackers) one by one, shake a little out in your hand, check the inside of the box,  Go through all the open ones first, then check the UNopened ones. You'll know when you find the problem, but don't stop.  Keep looking, there might be others.  Throw the infected goods away.  (If you know where you bought them, take them back to the store and get your money back)

When you're done, take out everything from the cabinet, then use a STRONG vacuum to suck out all debris from the cabinet.  Make sure you get up UNDERNEATH the shelves, the larva will hide under little nooks and crannies.

As far as spraying the cabinets when you're done, DON'T do it with Raid - or any kind of insecticide that comes in a pressurized spray can - you'll get everything all greasy.  If you do a good job of vacuuming, you probably won't have to do anything else.

These pests come from the factory.  All processed foods have this problem - the FDA allows a certain amount of "insect fragments" in foods, yours were eggs!  If you keep them too long, under the right conditions, you have bugs!  Even if you just bought it, the supplier probably had them too long.

We also have a page on stored product pests, you might be able to find yours there.
