Jared's dead Rat

A dead animal smell....

I've got a dead rat in my wall or under my floor or somewhere in my bathroom, and  it's really smelling up the place (of course).

How long will it take for the critter to decompose and quit smelling?

Hello, Jared:

Not a dumb question.  Pretty common really.

How long does it take for a rat to decompose?  Actually, it depends on a lot of things.  How many are actually dead, the ambient temperatures, air change rates, etc.

You could purchase a fan to fit in the window, blowing OUT, creating a negative air pressure in the room.  This does help a bit.

If you only have one or two, you could count on a couple of weeks - if they both died at the same time.  Usually, one survives longer than the other because of cannibalization - which stretches the smell time out.

If you can tell where they are, sometimes you can open up the wall....  It's hard to tell exactly.  I usually tell people to "bite the bullet" and wait it out.

You'll get a bunch of flies later on.  Not too much you can do about that either.  Luckily, the flies only last a few days.

Hope this helps.  Get back to me if you have any more questions.

Hi John:

Thanks so much for the reply!  We put a fan in the window, and that is helping.  (Thanks!)  It's nice to know there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
