Females can have anywhere up to 9 pups, although that's rare, it's usually 3 or 4. Squirrels in the wild, live anywhere from 2 to 5 years, although it's generally 3 or 4.
Squirrels are afraid of the dark, so they oftentimes won't come out of a trap easily when it's pitch dark, especially in an unfamiliar place. And some squirrels are a bit whacky. I've had them kill or hurt themselves within minutes of getting caught.
Really young squirrels aren't afraid of you, in fact, I've had them climb up my jeans - they are attracted to any moving animal, even dogs or cats. By the time they're weaned, they are then afraid of anything but their mother, even other squirrels.
Sounds like you have red squirrels.
