Urban squirrels are enured to the fact that houses with gutters collect a lot of good things to eat, so often they often go up there for that. Plus, they LOVE to explore - a good part of the reason they are so easy to trap.... And, of course, if they DO happen to be previous offspring, they do stick around the general area, and they already know that structures are their home territory.
