Squirrels are like you and me. We like to go out (mostly) every day. Sometimes we are kept in by weather or something else, but they are outside animals, not like mice, who would prefer to stay inside your house.
I'm mostly against one way doors because it only gives them another chance to get back inside, which they will do, if they want to.
They often have other entrance points also, so even after 45 years doing this, I never call myself an "expert." I would never declare a result such as your expert. I have been in attics where I KNEW there were multiple squirrels, but never seen a one. They hide pretty good, and they can get around in that attic better that you or I.
My advice would be to live trap in the attic, put down each and every one you catch and after all activity has ceased, repair the entrance point(s) with hardware cloth. Then, later on, when you KNOW FOR SURE that they're gone, make your permanent repairs.
Go thru my squirrel pages, look at all the pop-up, click on all the images, many of them have text descriptions. If you follow all those instructions, you will get rid of your squirrels.
All for free, and from a "sort of" expert....
