Just wanted to chime in on this since I've had this problem a couple of times -- I live in an old house on a heavily wooded lot.

Rat traps worked great for me, and you don't have to worry about releasing them. I especially like the plastic ones that are available now since they are much easier to set than the old wooden ones and more stable when they snap shut. Don't try to economize -- buy a few.

Still, the little buggers are very cute, so don't check your traps if there are any sentimental folks around.
