If you have an exterminator, I'm quite sure he'll have a better idea than I will, after all, he'll be able to make an on-site inspection and get to question you closely about what you saw, heard or experienced. More difficult for me as I don't know what the conditions are around your home or in your neighborhood.

I always make what can be called an "educated" guess that can be completely wrong, depending on the information I have at hand. It's hard to know what to do if the target is only a noise, and getting any kind of result often takes more than one night.

I think you should continue to research the problem, possibly with your on-site exterminator, and find out WHAT it is! Once you find that out, you'll have a better idea of what you need to do to end the problem.

Perhaps you should go thru my mouse and rat pages also.
