Sounds like they all have you pretty well bamboozeled.... And I've seen squirrels jump straight up 9 or 10 feet. They can probably jump higher.
Besides, they can probably just walk right up the side of your house, I've seen them do it with aluminum siding.
Cut off the downspouts 8-10 inches above the ground, so the chippies won't get up. You can also bait their burrows.
They're all 'boom and bust' animals, one year they're bad, the next you may not see any. You need a severe winter on a couple of traps!
