Squirrels are curious and will easily enter any structure, certainly if they sense any food inside. And definitely if they have been hand-fed by humans, perhaps a well-meaning neighbor. Trapping this animal would be advisable.

Your chimney still needs to be capped. In fact, now more than ever. There are plenty of animals that will take advantage of this secret place and they can cause you HUGE problems later on. Get it capped anyway.
