Got a potted plant? Leave it near the chum. Squirrels and other small animals like to dig around in it, that's a sure sign he's still there. How long? A few days (3 or 4) with no signs would make me think he's gone - for now.

You must find out how he got in and fix that. Make sure you have a chimney cap and that it's secure. Scrutinize all those areas they take advantage of, go thru my two squirrel pages for more hints.
