I fully understand. I actually came home one day and there was a squirrel getting a suntan laying on the deck rail 2 inches from my baited trap! Some just don't seem to care.
I can go 2 months without catching anything but birds, then I'll get 2 or 3 in a short period of time. John's 'familial' theory is probably accurate here, as a new group replaces the old ones, the new family all seem to behave the same and explore the traps.
After trying peanuts, corn, nilla wafers, reeses' cups, the most success I've had as bait is plain ole peanut butter on bread. I put a small piece of PB bread on the trip plate, and a half a slice on the top closed door...they have to basically stand on the trip plate to get to the piece stuck on the opposite 'roof'. Pretty sure this is John's recommended bait.
I'm in a dry spell right now, but I haven't seen many squirrels around since I removed three a few weeks ago. I guess I'm waiting for the next family to move into the neighborhood.
