Not sure what the problem here is, squirrels will go into most any trap, perhaps there is something wrong with the trap. Can you exchange that trap for another?

I always recommend the Hava-Hart 1040, because it's the one I've used for some 40 years, I know it works, see if you can trade it for one of those. Hate to see you have to buy another trap...
