Here is a follow up on my situation. I hired a contractor in August to seal up my soffits when the squirrels were out. While doing this we found the entry point and the nest in the soffit. They chewed a hole through the plastic soffit. The contractor removed all soffit and installed 1/2" hardware cloth and then we re-installed the plastic soffit.
After doing this, I still heard squirrels on the roof but they were not in my soffits or attic. They entered and exited the roof from a tree near the front (this is a townhouse). Subsequently I had the tree removed in September and have been squirrel free since. What a pleasure not to be woken every morning by squirrels.
Thanks again for your adivce.
