Well, it's really hard to diagnose something like this when I can't know all the details. But that's the way I do it, more or less. Actually, I get the customer to do that so he doesn't have to pay me for a service call.

I tell them to put a cracker up there, smeared with PB, and check it for a few days. Squirrels and mice will find it, especially if you put a light on and leave it on. Squirrels are "sight" animals and would investigate an area where a light is.

It's possible that the floors, roof or walls to act as a drum, so that what you hear might sound LARGE, when it isn't.
