I had the same problem because the squirrels were too small and they did not apply enough pressure on the plate to trigger the door. I knew that they would trigger a mouse trap, because they had taken the bait (peanut butter) and the trigger mechanism had been engaged. I put a mouse trap in the cage just under the plate,so when the mouse trap trigger snapped after the squirrel took the bait, it would hit the cage's plate and engage the door to shut. I caught three squirrels in two days with this method. Maybe it will work for you.
