A squirrel can chew through anything less than galvanized steel.

Might be babies in there? Did you look on the outside? Clean it up out there.

If it's just one renegade squirrel, you could either screen off the window with hardware cloth, or trap and remove him.

Be aware that screening off the window could just force him to pick another window, ad infinitum.
