A week later and no squirrels caught. But I think I'm getting closer. ;-)

I found another (primary?) entrance point on the opposite end of the house. It is a split-level house, so the attic space runs the full length of the house.

After several days of no chum bites or cage bait taken in the upper level (above the bedroom), I placed the trap on the roof by the first entry hole I found. Never saw them using this hole, though.

This morning, I heard him in the ceiling at the other end of the house, then could hear scratching in the gutter. I went out and was face to face with him. A corner of one of the lower roof lines, the shingle was loose and a clear hole into the attic. He ran off outside across the roof.

I placed a second trap on the roof right by the entry point. We'll see what happens.

I must have the most finicky squirrels in the world, as I had left my second trap out in the yard where dozens of squirrels run free all day. I just wanted to catch something to test the trap. Nothing. I'm using peanut butter on the trip plate.

This is war now.
