They feel safe under there.... Can you make it MORE than 4 inches or is that a big deal? Even so, the panels would offer them cover from aerial predators.

Or can you screen them out from underneath? You could probably do that with a wooden frame (removable in places) using half-inch hardware cloth. You'd have to wrap the HC around the wooden frame, otherwise the squirrels will chew through the wood.

I agree about the trapping, depending on the area, that could be never ending.
