Patience, patience.... Don't worry about the scent, they aren't that smart.

The 1030 is shorter than the 1040, by about 6 inches - works better for squirrels than the 1030. Check the box to be sure of the model you have. The 1040 is 30 inches long.

As far as bait is concerned, most of the time it doesn't matter. These little guys raid your trash, so you could feasibly bait your trap with garbage....
