You should always trap the occupants before you close any entrances. And if you close it up when they're in there, they might just chew their way out - not a good thing.

Best to live trap them, it's easy. Using snap traps they can get wary of the traps when they observe a dead companion in the trap. Also, if they just catch a foot, they'll chew the foot off and you'll never get them in a snap trap again.
